Project Overview

FGS Plant, working in collaboration with sister companies from the Heathcote Holdings group, delivered temporary infrastructure solutions to support the opening of new lion enclosures at The Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent. The project marked the arrival of five African lions rescued from conflict in Ukraine and involved both enclosure construction and preparations for increased visitor numbers during the official launch event.

Project Requirements

The unveiling event was expected to attract additional visitors and media personnel, which meant supplementary parking space was required. The chosen parking location was a grassed area with soft, wet ground conditions that needed to be made suitable for vehicles and foot traffic.

Our Solution

FGS Plant provided a temporary access and parking solution covering 3,000 square metres. The works included:

  • Trackway Installation:
200 T-mats were laid to form a spine access route and an emergency access road. This was followed by the installation of 3,000 square metres of Pro-T trackway mats to establish the main parking area.
  • Installation Process:
The mats were delivered using a tractor and trailer and installed over a three-day period by a four-person crew with a telehandler.

Support for Enclosure Development

In addition to parking and access works, FGS Utilities supported the construction of the lion enclosures by contributing to site preparation and landscaping. Key elements included:

  • Groundworks, levelling, and turfing
  • Creation of woodchip and bark areas, sandpits, and footpaths
  • Installation of feeding platforms and anti-dig perimeter systems
  • Stand-off fencing for safety and controlled public viewing
  • Decorative landscaping with Scottish cobbles, planters and new signage
  • Internal fabrication works within the lion dens
  • Laying soil and compost for planting areas

The site was completed ahead of The Big Cat Sanctuary’s Open Day, which marked the official opening of the enclosures to press and invited guests.

Outcome

This project demonstrated FGS Utilities’ ability to provide adaptable, temporary infrastructure in line with client and site-specific requirements. By working closely with The Big Cat Sanctuary and group partners, we supported both the enclosure development and event preparations within the agreed timeframe.
